£0FREE Ground Floor Shipping on this item within 10 working days. Far afield and rural areas will incur a charge.
A truly unique mid Century cabinet privately commissioned for a Client and hand made by Waring & Gillows of Lancaster. The cabinet was commissioned in the 1960’s to the Client’s bespoke requirements. Hand drawings are included within the sale for provenance and authenticity.
Gillows of Lancaster and London, also known as Gillow & Co., was an English furniture making firm based in Lancaster, Lancashire, and in London. It was founded in Lancaster in about 1730 by Robert Gillow (1704–1772).[1]
Gillows was owned by the family until 1814 when it was taken over by Redmayne, Whiteside, and Ferguson; they continued to use the Gillow name. Gillows furniture was a byword for quality, and other designers used Gillows to manufacture their furniture. Gillows furniture is referred to by Jane Austen, Thackeray and the first Lord Lytton, and in one of Gilbert and Sullivan‘s comic operas.[3][a] In 1903 Gillows merged with Warings of Liverpool to become Waring and Gillow. There are the tell tell signs of Waring & Gillow quality production throughout. It is finished in mahogany with very heavy glass shelves and beautiful brass handles. The quality of the carving on the feet is quite exceptional and in outstanding original condition. The brass lock is even stamped with Waring & Gillow and works exactly as it should. The shelves are adjustable via internal wooden pegs.
A truly beautiful and unique piece of furniture ready for a new owner to treasure.
