A super quality mid century glazed bookcase in oak and walnut. Produced in the 1960’s it is completely original throughout with some real signs of quality. The carcass and shelves are solid oak with the lower doors being walnut veneered and book matched on the beautiful grain. We love the size, the lines and the perfectly aged colour. The bookcase has it’s original heavy glass sliding doors. We could not find a makers badge but it is certainly a quality piece, akin to Morris of Glasgow and Heals.
We think the piece offers lots of flexible storage capabilities as a bookcase, drinks cabinet, display unit etc. It can easily be accommodated in to living, dining or bedroom styling. Fantastic and highly desirable mid century styling at such a great value for money price.

Both the wood and metalwork have been refinished to give a fantastic piece, with all the character still remaining. A superb example of Globe Wernicke’s stacking ‘elastic’ bookcase. This is in the more rare and better quality oak veneer and radial cut oak, rather than the more common mahogany veneer ones. All glass and brass ware are original, together with the internal iron works for the ‘up and over’ scissor door lifts system. Pretty rare to see this on the Globe Wernicke’s.
Wernicke Co. produced the Elastic bookcase in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the late 19th Century (founded circa 1882) until they were bought by The Globe Files Co. in 1899. Wernicke invented the elastic bookcase and patented the designs.
Once Globe bought Wernicke the famous brand Globe-Wernicke began producing the elastic stack able book cases under patent in the USA. Thomas Turner also started marketing the design in England. Globe-Wernicke then expanded in to Canada, France, Belgium and Austria.
