Description

These are outstanding, very rare and very exciting bookcases. Wernicke Co. produced the Elastic bookcase in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the late 19th Century (founded circa 1882) until they were bought by The Globe Files Co. in 1899. Wernicke invented the elastic bookcase and patented the designs.

Once Globe bought Wernicke the famous brand Globe-Wernicke began producing the elastic stack able book cases under patent in the USA. Thomas Turner also started marketing the design in England. Globe-Wernicke then expanded in to Canada, France, Belgium and Austria.

Because these bookcases are marked as Wernicke (not Globe Wernicke) we know they pre date 1899. One of the stamps on a shelf within the bookcase marks a patent registration 1896. Therefore these bookcases were produced between 1896 and 1899.  They are therefore very important the history of the ‘Elastic Bookcase’ and the formation of the Global brand Globe-Wernicke.

From an historical Wernicke catalogue we have found that this style of bookcase (of four styles they produced) was the highest grade premium radial cut oak. The carved detailed on the cornices were also the most detailed and highest quality that they offered. Likewise the decoartive brass banding, corner protectors and handles.

We can not found another example of this style. We can find other lower grade Wernicke bookcases and many of the later and plainer Globe-Wernicke bookcases.   All of the above shows the rarity of this piece.

The bookcases have been together since new and have been in an Accountants office in the UK since the 1930’s (we were informed by the building owner). Therefore we would realy like all four bookcases to stay together. For this reason we have priced the one piece at a considerably lower price than later Globe Wernicke bookcases. The closest examples of matching tall bookcases in oak in a similar condition we have found range from £7800-9900 and they are matching sets of three, not four bookcases.

All glass and brass ware are original.

If you have any further questions or would like to view please contact us and we can certainly accommodate.
