A beautiful early 20th Century glazed bookcase in oak. The piece offers lots of storage in its five generous glazed sections. The bookcase is in 5 sections but has been screwed together with its original L brackets, so that the piece can be moved as one piece. The whole piece is presented in beautifully aged warm oak with its original shaped wooden handles too. All five doors simply lift open from the bottom and move very freely. The glass looks like modern replacements – generally due to smashed/ missing original glass or replacement of wood for glass. We love the glass though for sure!

A beautiful early 20th Century stacking bookcase by Lebus. The piece offers lots of storage in its four generous glazed sections, together with a bottom pull out drawer. The bookcase splits in to 5 sections for ease of transportation and moving to the room of your choice. The whole piece is presented in perfectly aged oak with the cutest original button handles too. This bookcase has some very attractive features that set it apart from most stacking bookcases; namely the curved lines, the hand carved fretwork to the cornice and the shaped sides to the top of the piece. All marks of quality that would have set this bookcase at the upper end of what Lebus offered in the early 20th Century. This would have been an expensive bookcase when new, and now it is even better with age. We haven’t come across a better Lebus bookcase!

An early example of Globe Wernicke’s stacking ‘elastic’ bookcase. Wernicke Co. produced the Elastic bookcase in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the late 19th Century (founded circa 1882) until they were bought by The Globe Files Co. in 1899. Wernicke invented the elastic bookcase and patented the designs.
Once Globe bought Wernicke the famous brand Globe-Wernicke began producing the elastic stack able book cases under patent in the USA. Thomas Turner also started marketing the design in England. Globe-Wernicke then expanded in to Canada, France, Belgium and Austria.
This is an early example dating from circa 1899 to 1910. The carcass is in mahogany with each section retaining the original Globe Wernicke label for authenticity. Each section has the patented up and over scissor system to access the inside. With the added bonus of a drawer at the bottom this bookcase offers a good array of storage without being an overpowering size. The Globe Wernicke bookcases are becoming increasingly sought after and this is a very early one. There are some cosmetic marks but all are photographed and are only visible on close inspection.
