A superb example of Globe Wernicke’s stacking ‘elastic’ bookcase. This is in the more rare and better quality oak veneer and radial cut oak, rather than the more common mahogany veneer ones. All glass and brass ware are original, together with the internal iron works for the ‘up and over’ scissor door lifts system. Pretty rare to see this on the Globe Wernicke’s.
Wernicke Co. produced the Elastic bookcase in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the late 19th Century (founded circa 1882) until they were bought by The Globe Files Co. in 1899. Wernicke invented the elastic bookcase and patented the designs.
Once Globe bought Wernicke the famous brand Globe-Wernicke began producing the elastic stack able book cases under patent in the USA. Thomas Turner also started marketing the design in England. Globe-Wernicke then expanded in to Canada, France, Belgium and Austria.

A very cute and stylish desk / table by Abbess. Made from a beautifully rich Walnut and walnut veneer it could be used as a desk, if space is tight, a cute dressing table or hall/ console table. It could equally be a great desk for a child or teen. Made around the late 1960’s to early 1970’s it retains the Abbess label inside the drawer and is stamped to the bottom of the drawer. Superb Retro styling and a great colour. A desk/ table with a difference. There is one very small area of missing/ cracked veneer to the bottom left corner of the drawer. Very small indeed but please see photograph for size.

So we created the style and practicality from original materials and kept all of the character of antique wood. We think it’s the best of both worlds and love the look and feel of this. Dating from the mid 20th Century (circa 1940-50’s) this came from a school changing room. 100% original with fantastic patina all round i.e to the metal frame, the wooden seating area and even the hooks. We won’t be too upset if this doesn’t sell as we may get to keep it!
