£0FREE Delivery on this piece. More remote and rural locations will incur a charge.
A superb solid oak bookcase dating from around the turn of the century to the 1920’s and very much of the Arts & Crafts influence (1880-1920 in the UK) . The colour of the oak and quality of carpentry show the overall quality of this piece. It has some nice details setting apart from the rest too. Very attractively designed and well produced feet, together with pegged shelf end stays set the design detail. This reflects both the quality of carpentry and craftsmanship, together with the Arts & Crafts design elements. It was hand made by James Phillips & Sons of Union Street, Bristol. (1877-1973). They were a well known family run business of quality carpenters, created by James Phillips as a one man company. Their mahogany dining tables now fetch £2000-£4000 regularly.

£0FREE Delivery on this item. More remote and rural locations will incur a charge.
A superb example of Globe Wernicke’s stacking ‘elastic’ bookcase. This is in the more rare and better quality oak veneer and radial cut oak, rather than the more common mahogany veneer ones. All glass and brass ware are original, together with the internal iron works for the ‘up and over’ scissor door lifts system. Pretty rare to see this on the Globe Wernicke’s.
Wernicke Co. produced the Elastic bookcase in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the late 19th Century (founded circa 1882) until they were bought by The Globe Files Co. in 1899. Wernicke invented the elastic bookcase and patented the designs.
Once Globe bought Wernicke the famous brand Globe-Wernicke began producing the elastic stack able book cases under patent in the USA. Thomas Turner also started marketing the design in England. Globe-Wernicke then expanded in to Canada, France, Belgium and Austria.

Read moreIncredibly Rare Globe Wernicke Premium Range Oak Bookcase
£0Free Shipping included within the price but distant/ remote and rural areas will incur a charge.
This is a very rare and exceptional bookcase by Globe Wernicke. Globe bought Wernicke to begin the reign of the famous brand Globe-Wernicke. They are most well known for producing the elastic stack able book cases under patent in the USA. Thomas Turner also started marketing the design in England. Globe-Wernicke then expanded in to Canada, France, Belgium and Austria.
From an historical Wernicke catalogue we have found that this style of bookcase (of four styles they produced) was the highest grade premium radial cut oak. We can not found another example of this style. We can find many Globe-Wernicke stacking bookcases in all of the finishes they produced but we can not find another bookcase of this style, design, size and weight. All of the above shows the rarity of this piece. It could even have been a specially commissioned piece.
We estimate the weight to be circa 100-120kgs. This is a testament to the quality of the solid oak used throughout. However, please bear this in mind when considering purchasing and whcih room you would envisage the bookcase. We could only offer a ground floor delivery service with at least two men.
If you have any further questions or would like to view please contact us and we can certainly accommodate.
