An excellent example of the ever popular Abbess pedestal desk. These are often referred to as Teacher’s desks but this came from a private home in central Cambridge. This desk dates from around the mid to late 1950’s and is in excellent original condition. It retains all of its internal drawer liners with the Abbess stamp, together with its original stationery tray. It is in a gorgeous rich colour and a compact but very usable size. The original Abbess brass levelling feet are are still attached to the bottom of the legs. The feet can be wound out to level the desk on uneven floors or raise the whole desk height by around 30mm (maximum). A very good example indeed.
A great size offering a compact but fully functioning desk. The colour and condition are exactly right for a very stylish work/ study desk – or a teenager’s study desk?
We have sold a number of these Abbess desks and they never hang around for long.

An amazing desk in solid English oak, dating from the early 1930’s. These desks typically came from a Government office/ Public Service such as Civil Servant Offices, Schools, Railways etc. This desk came to us in a dreadful state of old varnish and paint. It is now presented in a warm oak, retaining signs of wear and use to maintain the character and authenticity of the desk. The beautiful aged brass cup handles also carry the GR stamps. There are cosmetic marks and signs of use to the original green top. Please see photographs.
